St. Andrews Old Course

Par 72, 6609 yards, Rating 71.2, Slope 128
The game of golf has been played in St. Andrews for some 600 years. It's golf's mecca. Golf's home. There are five 18-hole courses associated with the town of St. Andrews and all are available – by Act of Parliament – for public play.

There really is nothing quite like a round on the Old Course at St. Andrews. As you look down the wide-open first fairway you think, “nothing to it.” However, intimidation soon sets in as you wait for your turn on the tee. Finally, your name is called (in a thick Scottish brogue) and your nerves begin to lash out. Luckily, the first fairway is forgiving and you can get away with a drive that’s not your best.

From that first shot on, the course never disappoints. You’ll find your way over, around, or through such famous landmarks as Cheape’s Bunker, Principal’s Nose, The Beardies, Hell Bunker, The Coffins, and (of course) the infamous Road Hole. Finish it off with a walk across the Swilcan Bridge and up the 18th fairway for golf’s most inspirational final hole.

The course will host its 28th Open Championship in 2010 and you can be assured the Tiger will be back for another crack at one of golf’s most important titles. Other Open Champions at St. Andrews include Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, and John Daly.

Please note: Tee times on the Old Course can often be difficult to arrange in advance. Please see your itinerary notes or consult with a Golfpac International representative for more information.

Restrictions: The Old Course has handicap restrictions of 24 or lower for men and 36 or lower for women. Please note: To play the Old Course, you also have to play one of the other courses in St. Andrews.

Carnoustie

Par 72, 6941 Yards
Seven times a British Open course, Carnoustie is a stern challenge. Ben Hogan's only British Open appearance -- and victory -- took place here in 1953. The venerable links also played host to the 1999 British Open, which saw one of the most bizarre finishes in history. Frenchman Jean Van de Velde held a three shot lead with one hole remaining and took a triple bogey on the 18th to set up a three man playoff. Paul Lawrie, a native Scot, played brilliantly on the final two holes of the playoff for the victory over Van de Velde and American Justin Leonard. The course last hosted the 2007 Championship which saw Irishman Padraig Harrington win the Championship in a 4 hole playoff over Spainard Sergio Garcia.

Please note: Carnoustie has handicap restrictions of 28 for men and 36 for women.

Kingsbarns

Par 72, 7126 yards
Although only open since July 2000, Kingsbarns is already heralded as one of Scotland's best and most exciting links courses. Built along a stretch of shoreline just a few miles from St. Andrews, the layout has drawn great praise from golf critics everywhere. It has donned the cover of Links Magazine and has been rated by many Golfpac travelers as their favorite course in Scotland!

St. Andrews New Course

Par 71, 6604 yards, Rating 71.9, Slope 125
Designed by Old Tom Morris in 1894, many locals consider the New Course to be as tough a test as the Old. Closer to the sea, the best holes of the New Course are at the turn, meandering through some of St. Andrews' largest dunes. Wind is nearly always a major factor in playing good golf here.

St. Andrews Jubilee Course

Originally opened in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, the Jubilee has since undergone many upgrades. Curtis Strange officially opened the 'new' Jubilee in 1989, and it now plays at over 6,800 yards from the championship tees.

St. Andrews Castle Course

The Castle Course is the first new tournament standard golf course to be built in St Andrews in nearly 100 years. This cliff top wonder, about 10 minutes east of St. Andrews, was designed by David McLay Kidd (of Bandon Dunes fame) where at times you'll tee up some 80 feet above the St Andrews Bay. Opened to rave reviews on June 28, 2008, Kidd incorporated five sets of tees, wider fairways and bigger greens into this 7200 yard, par 72 course to compensate for the exposed nature of the cliff top site which offers fantastic views of the town of St Andrews. The Castle Course (named after Kinkell Castle) is now the seventh course amongst the Links Trust of St. Andrews. A true gem in the making!

Crail Golfing Society - Balcomie Links

Par 69, 5922 yards
The Crail Golfing Society has been playing golf over the links at Balcomie since the late 1700s. Balcomie -- the original 18 at Crail -- is often recognized for the standard of its greens. Although not long by today's standards, the links can be a difficult test when the wind blows off the North Sea. It's truly a joy to play. Crail is located 10 miles southeast of St. Andrews along the southern Fife coastline.

Crail Golfing Society - Craighead Links

Par 71, 6700 yards
The Craighead Links at Crail opened in 1998 and quickly became a favorite among local players and travelers alike. American course architect Gil Hanse created a classic Scottish links with beautiful panoramic views of the sea and local countryside. Similar to Muirfield to the south, Hans design has no two consecutive holes that face the same direction. This creates an ever changing pattern of wind to confound and test players of all levels. And, if you're looking for 36 holes in one day, play it in the afternoon after a morning round at Balcomie.

Elie (Golf House Club)

Par 70, 6273 yards
Test your shotmaking skills with a round at Elie. The members of The Golf House Club play at Elie and always maintain the course in top condition. There are no par 5's and only two par 3's; however, all the holes have their own distinct character. Records of golf over these links date from 1589, and there are claims that play may date back to the year 1450.

Please note: Elie has handicap restrictions of 20 or lower for both men and women. And, a jacket & tie are mandatory for dinner in the clubhouse.

Fairmont St. Andrews - Kittocks Course

Par 72, 7049 yards
Bruce Devlin and the legendary Gene Sarazen teamed up to design one of Scotland's most interesting new courses. The second course built at the Fairmont St. Andrews, The Kittocks (open since July 2002) is an outstanding design with unmatched views of St. Andrews and the sea. There are some tremendous holes here and the cliff-side par-three 18th is one of Scotland's most exciting and unusual finishing holes.

Fairmont St. Andrews - Torrance Course

Par 71, 6604 yards, Rating 71.9, Slope 125
This spectacular 18-hole championship course opened in the early fall of 2001. It was designed by the late Gene Sarazen and Scotsman Sam Torrance. The par-72, 7,026-yard layout circles the hotel and is blessed with stunning views of St. Andrews and daunting cliff-edge tees and greens.

Lundin Links

Par 71, 6394 yards
Lundin Links remains one of the local Scots' most interesting and popular seaside courses. Although the club itself was founded in 1868, the course dates back to 1909 when famous local native James Braid was brought in to design a new 18. The layout has a number of seaside holes along with a number of inland holes that create a great contrast in style. The seaside holes are often paired with the seaside holes from the neighboring links at Leven to create a true 18-hole links course for local tournaments. In fact, the so-called Old Course is often used as a qualifying course when the Open Championship is held at St. Andrews.

Scotscraig

Par 71, 6550 yards
Located between St. Andrews and Carnoustie in the town of Tayport, Scotscraig is set just 1/2 mile from the beach. Although the course has many characteristics of a links design, it also has a distinct heathland feel that is quite different from its neighbors at St. Andrews and Carnoustie. The current design is credited to the great Scottish designer, James Braid. The golf club itself is considered to be the 13th oldest in the world and the course is often used as a qualifying site for the Open Championship.

The Dukes

Par 72, 6749 yards
Designed by five-time Open winner Peter Thomson, this layout provides great contrast to the famous Old Course. The Dukes is set on an elevated, parkland setting with majestic views over St. Andrews and the countryside. The Dukes has its own excellent clubhouse facility and golf carts are available here. Take a cart and it's the perfect choice for your day of arrival.
