The 39th Ryder Cup, to be held at historic Medinah Country Club just outside of Chicago, IL, is set for action September 25 - 30, 2012. Will Team USA and captain Davis Love III be able to recapture the Cup or will Team Europe and captain Jose Maria Olazabal be able to retain the honor? About the Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup, one of the last great sporting events founded on prestige rather than prize money, spans 35 competitions over 80 years. The origin of the idea to stage international matches between the best American professionals and those of Great Britain is a subject of debate among golf historians. Regardless of who takes credit, the first informal matches were played in 1921 at Gleneagles, Scotland with the British defeating the US Team, 9-3. After an unofficial match at Wentworth Golf Club in 1926, English seed merchant and entrepreneur Samuel Ryder was asked to provide a trophy and encourage the establishment of matches on a regular basis. Ryder agreed at once and commissioned the design of the gold chalice that bears his name and the likeness of British golf star Abe Mithcell on top. The first official Ryder Cup matches were held in 1927 at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts with the United States team defeating the team from Great Britain in the historic first match, 9 1/2 to 2 1/12. In 1979, Team Great Britain & Ireland decided to expand their team to include players from other European countries.

About Medinah Country Club

In the early 1920’s a group of Shriners from Chicago’s Medinah Temple had a dream to create a country retreat. Their goal was to build the best country club in North America with a 54-hole golf complex and a variety of other recreational activities. After obtaining land in an area then known as Meacham, in northern DuPage County, Tom Bendelow (a world-renowned golf course architect from Scotland) was retained to design the golf courses. In September of 1925, the Shriners enjoyed their first round of golf at Medinah on Course #1. Construction on Course #2 was completed a year later and Course #3 was completed in 1928, but was the subject of a major redesign in the early 1930’s. Since then, Medinah has hosted two PGA Championships, three U.S. Opens, one U.S. Senior Open and three Western Opens. It will be a fitting venue in 2012 for golf’s greatest event.

Ryder Cup Format

The Ryder Cup Matches involve various match play competitions between players selected from two teams of twelve. Currently, the matches consist of eight foursome matches, eight fourball matches and 12 singles matches. The winner of each match scores a point for their team, with ½ a point each for any match that is tied after 18 holes.

A foursome match is a competition between two teams of two golfers. The golfers on the same team take alternate shots throughout the match, with the same ball. Each hole is won by the team that completes the hole in the fewest shots. A fourball match is also a competition between two teams of two golfers, but all four golfers play their own ball throughout the round rather than alternating shots, and each hole is won by the team whose individual golfer has the lowest score. A singles match is a standard match play competition between two golfers.
