Saturday
Depart the States for Portugal.
Sunday
Arrive Portugal (Lisbon) where you will be met by a Golfpac
International representative who will assist with securing your
rental car, provide a welcome tour briefing and answer any last
minute questions you may have (you may also want to consider
taking a taxi from the airport and having the rental car
delivered to the hotel - please inquire). From the airport travel
(15 minutes) to city center Lisbon and your hotel for check-in.
SIGHTSEEING SUGGESTION: LISBON
Lisbon is one of the most charming capitals in Europe with plenty of sights. You can explore medieval Old Town Alfama with its maze-like streets overlooked by the Sao Jorge castle. Your next stop might be New Town, which was built after an earthquake had destroyed much of Portugal in the late 18th Century. This area is also known as the Baixa and features the elegant Chiado shopping area at the top end. For off the course fun, the Santa Justa elevator will take you to the Bairro Alto (high quarter), which is home to much of Lisbon's nightlife.
ACCOMMODATION: REAL PALACIO (Standard Room)
The Real Palacio Hotel, originally a seventeenth century
palace, tastefully restored combines comfort, charm and
sophistication. This property is located in a quiet quarter in
the center of Lisbon. The elegant atmosphere and attention to
detail offers the finest of accommodations to be found in Lisbon.
Monday
Enjoy your first day of golf today at Oitavos Dunes!
GOLF: OITAVOS DUNES
Within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, at the lovely
Quinta da Marinha Resort, is the only course in Portugal designed
by the American design firm of Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and
Associates. Opened in 2001, Oitavos Dunes is rare in that it
features 18 holes in a continuous loop (much like the Old Course
in St. Andrews, Scotland). The course winds its way through both
pine forest and dunes land, and the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra
Mountains can be seen from every hole. Also in view - in the
middle of the round - is Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of
Continental Europe. Oitavos measures 6,893 yards from the back
tees, and it is the only course in Europe to be recognized as a
Gold Certified Signature Sanctuary by Audubon International.
Venue of the 2007-09 European Tour Portuguese Open.
Overnight at REAL PALACIO (Standard Room).
Tuesday
Today is a travel day as you head about three hours south to
Vilamoura. On the way, we suggest a visit to Setubal and
Arrabida.
SIGHTSEEING SUGGESTION: SETUBAL & ARRABIDA
Visit the lovely and picturesque vinery at Quinta de Alcube,
overlooking the Arrabida Mountains and only 45 minutes from the
centre of Lisbon. Tasting notes on the wines, a guide, and the
region's famous Azeitao cheese and presunto compliment the
experience. Complete your visit by viewing the cheese making
process in the old fashioned way. After sightseeing continue south (two hours via toll road or three hours via the scenic route) to Vilamoura.
ACCOMMODATION: THE LAKE RESORT (Garden View Room)
Located in Vilamoura, next to the marina overlooking the sea and
just 20 minutes from Faro International Airport, the 5 star Lake
Resort hotel has its own lake, outdoor heated pool and unique
sandy beach. All 192 rooms have their own private balconies with
panoramic views over the marina and seafront, ideally situated
for golf, walks by the sea, local restaurants and shops.
Wednesday
GOLF: VILAMOURA OLD COURSE
This is the oldest of the five Vilamoura courses which form part
of the luxury tourist resort complex close to magnificent beaches
and the Vilamoura Marina. Course designer Frank Pennink wanted to
create a course in the Algarve that would remind players of the
beautiful and challenging British parkland courses.
Overnight at THE LAKE RESORT (Garden View Room).
Thursday
Today is free to relax and sightsee around the
Algarve.
SIGHTSEEING SUGGESTION: TAVIRA
Tavira is one of the most attractive towns in the Algarve and its
origin dates back to around 2.000 BC. During the occupation of
the Algarve by the Moors this town was considered of great
importance due to its fishing industry. Dom Paio Peres Correia
took it from the Moors in anger in 1242 after seven of his
principal Knights were killed during a period of truce. In the
17th Century the port was of considerable importance, shipping
produce such as salt, dried fish and wine. Like most of the
Algarve its buildings were all virtually destroyed by the
earthquake of 1755.
Overnight at THE LAKE RESORT (Garden View Room).
Friday
GOLF: MONTE REI, NORTH COURSE
The Monte Rei Golf Club is set in the picturesque foothills of
the Eastern Algarve, with sweeping views of the Serra do
Caldeirao mountains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the
south. The first of two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses -
"Monte Rei North" opened for play in June 2007 (the 2nd
course is under design). This par 72 Championship course measures
6567m from the Tournament tees is a truly unique design; with
water coming into play on eleven of the eighteen holes.
Overnight at THE LAKE RESORT (Garden View Room).
Saturday
GOLF: VALE DO LOBO, THE ROYAL COURSE
The Royal Course, Vale do Lobo, designed by Sir Henry Cotton in
the stunning Resort of Vale do Lobo enjoys wonderful scenery
amongst umbrella pine trees, typical of the Algarve. The Par 3
16th hole is one of the most photographed holes in European Golf.
What a great way to finish your golf in the Algarve!
Overnight at THE LAKE RESORT (Garden View Room).
