Sightseeing
Sightseeing in the Spanish Costa del Sol
Rock of Gibraltar
Historic Gibraltar is a short drive down the coast or take a
fast cat boat and get there via water. British since 1704, the
history of the Rock is long and interesting. There are many
remnants which most visitors will find fascinating. The Tower of
Homage, a Moorish Castle, built by the Arab conquerors in 1333 is
one of the many ancient sightseeing places to visit.
Ronda
This town has long attracted artists and writers.
Ronda floats between the earth and the stars over a gorge that
slices the town into two parts. One side is the old Moorish side
thousand year old city and the other side is the new
modern town which is now the city center. Located in the old city
is the Plaza de Toros, the cathedral of bullfighting, completed
in 1784 and is one of Spains oldest and most picturesque
bullrings.
Marbella
A day visit to Marbella will introduce you to Phoenician, Arab,
Greek, Carthaginian, Roman, Vandal and Visigoth influences. When
Queen Isabella first set eye on Marbella she is reputed to have
said, Que mar tab bella (what a beautiful sea)!
Whether this is true or not this town certainly deserves its
name. Enjoy a walk along the Avenida Puerto del Mar which leads
from the beach to the old Alameda, a centuries old miniature
botanic garden. The most fascinating part of Marbella is the
Casco Antiguo—the Old Town. Steeped in history, rich with
monuments and reminders of Marbellas illustrious past with
winding alleyways of ancient Moorish influence now populated with
shops and restaurants.
