Royal County Down Golf Club

Located in the charming seaside town of Newcastle, Royal County Down Golf Club is one of the most famous — and toughest — golf courses in the world. Originally built in 1889, it is the only course in Northern Ireland designed by one of Scotland's most famous golfers and one of its most beloved figures: Old Tom Morris. With the majestic Mountains of Mourne looming above it, Royal County Down is as challenging as it is beautiful. But don't let the stunning views of Dundrum Bay and the Irish Sea distract you. Punishing rough, purple heather and golden gorse await the errant shot. Due to the course's difficulty and numerous blind shots, a caddie is highly recommended. In 2011, Golf Magazine ranked Royal County Down the fifth best course in the world.

Royal Portrush Golf Club

One of two 'Royal' courses in Northern Ireland, The Dunluce Course at Royal Portrush is steeped in history. The only course in Ireland to have hosted the Open Championship (1951, when Max Faulkner won) it is on everybody's shortlist of top Irish courses, a great test of any golfer's nerves and shot-making ability. Founded in 1888, the club was named 'The Royal Portrush Golf Club' in 1895 when the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) became patron. The course is famous not only for its magnificent turf and superb golf holes but also for its lovely setting, overlooked by the ruins of Dunluce Castle. A must play on any itinerary for golfers who are visiting Northern Ireland, Royal Portrush is the host of the 2012 Irish Open.

Portstewart Golf Club

Portstewart is a difficult but fair open links course, giving magnificent views of Donegal Hills, the rolling Atlantic, Strand Beach and the River Bann. Open in 1992, The Strand Course is of championship standard, and is now, arguably, vying with Royal County Down as the finest course in Northern Ireland. A must-play for any golfer visiting the north, the Strand course has played host to major events such as the Irish Amateur Championship, British Girls' Championship and final qualifying for the Open Championship. Prior to taking on the tougher Strand Course, a warm up on Portstewart's Riverside Course (5,725 yards) or Old Course (4,730 yards) might be a good idea.

Founded in 1896, The ancient Ardglass Golf Club, although not long by modern standards, still offers a great day of links golf and is rated among the top courses in Northern Ireland. The second hole is particularly memorable with the tee set on the edge of a precipice. The course is located on the north-eastern coast of Ireland with some stunning views and many excellent and unique golf holes. The course is about 1 hour by car from Belfast and less than 30 minutes from the world renowned Royal County Down golf links at Newcastle.

It is overlooked by Galgorm Castle, which was built in 1618 by Sir Faithful Fortescue. From the outset it has received wonderful reviews from both golf writers and players, rapidly building up a reputation as one of the finest inland courses in Ireland. The course has been built in the estate grounds of Galgorm Castle, a site of great historical interest and one of the finest examples of Jacobean architecture in Ireland.
