Arabella Golf Club, Arabella
Voted the number two golf course in South Africa (by Compleat Golfer) and the top golf course in the Western Cape, the Arabella Golf Club — home to the Nelson Mandela Invitational — stretches through rolling fairways, deceptive bunkers and challenging water traps. A truly unique golf course set on the banks of the Bot River lagoon and fringed by indigenous fynbos. There is no doubt that a round of golf here ranks with the best experiences anywhere in the world.
The Links at Fancourt Golf Club, George
The Links at Fancourt is an awe-inspiring example of magnificent design and golf-course construction, about which designer Gary Player says, "Links golf is how the game originated and at The Links we take golfers back to the roots of golf — and they can play a 'British Open' all of their own!" The Links is without doubt the most impressive piece of golf design and construction ever in South Africa. When playing this amazing course, it is difficult to believe that one is not in Scotland or Ireland, until, that is, one notices the imposing Outeniqua mountain range that rises impressively in the background. The Links was the host venue for the 2003 Presidents Cup and 2005 Women's World Cup of Golf.
Montagu Golf Course at Fancourt, George
The Fancourt Resort and estate complex near the Garden Route Town of George is South Africa's premier golf resort destination. The Montagu course was built in 1991 by Gary Player and recently redesigned by renowned architect David McLay Kidd, no expense has been spared to protect its reputation as one of the best conditioned layouts in South Africa. Although a coastal venue, Montagu is a serenely beautiful parkland course, the direction of play clearly signaled by its tree lines, knife edge manicuring and starkly visible bunkering. A great part of its allure is its user-friendliness: a variety of tees make it widely accessible and the rough isn't overly difficult.
Gary Player Golf and Country Club, Sun City
The Gary Player Country Club at the famed Sun City Resort has been ranked as the top course in South Africa and is acknowledged as a difficult and demanding course. The course requires stamina and accuracy from players. The comparatively flat nature of the golf course is misleading — water hazards, cunningly sited bunkers and pins hidden away on kidney shaped greens makes up for the lack of gradient.
Lost City Golf Course, Sun City
Golfers are astounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Lost City golf course. The dessert style design of the golf course has an exotic allure all of its own and designer Gary Player has acknowledged it as one of his favourite courses. The water hazard at the 13th hole is inhabited by 2 meter long crocodiles and you are discouraged to retrieve your lost ball.
Pearl Valley Golf Club, Franshhoek
Pearl Valley golf course is situated in the famed Franshhoek valley and is the second Jack Nicklaus course in South Africa. The golf course lies within a ring of mountains formed by the Drakenstein and Simonsberg. Pearl Valley has become one of the major jewels in the Western Cape's already gem encrusted golf course crown.
Pezula Golf Course, Knysna
The course at Pezula is a sweeping spectacle of fairways and greens rolling through the pristine landscape. The breathtaking, award-winning 18-hole course rates amongst the best and the most scenic golf courses in the world.
Pinnacle Point Golf Club, Mossel Bay
Pinnacle Point stretches along four kilometers of spectacular coastline and boasts dramatic cliff-side holes and over 1000 acres of unspoiled beachfront. It is comparable with the best in the world and truly is a design masterpiece. The views are awe inspiring, with dramatic coastal views of the ocean from all area's of the course. Some of the holes are situated along the cliff side. In addition to this, the natural beauty of the indigenous flora and fauna complete this unique golfing experience. Darren Clarke described the layout as "the best golf course on the planet adding that "Pinnacle Point is Pebble Beach on steroids!" Pinnacle Point has been selected as one of the World's Top 10 Best New Courses for 2006.
